Moutere Hills Cellar Door
Come and visit our Cellar Door where our friendly and knowledgeable team will take you through a tasting of the Moutere Hills wines and help you to select some treasures for you to take home.
A small charge is made for you to select and taste 4 of our wines, we can also make recommendations for you to sample the best from our delicious vintages. Our wines are complex and true to the land and make the perfect accompaniment to Alistair’s gourmet creations in the restaurant.
We produce ten different handmade varietals on site including our very limited edition Chenin Blanc and Viognier, most of our wines are open for tasting including at least one of our Sarau reserve wines.
Chardonnay is our flagship wine, 50% of the vineyards are planted with this varietal, we make two styles, toasty oak and our Sarau Reserve barrel selection more fruity and creamy.
Other varietals include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Rose, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Merlot.
Our most iconic wine is a Bordeaux style blend of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which we have named RUMER after our vineyard dog, a beautiful Kelpie. Rumer enjoys sitting on the back of the quad bike or tractor and chasing helicopters but she hasn’t caught one yet!
Sarau was the name given to the Moutere by German settlers in the mid 1800’s and we have named our reserve wines in their honour.
The Moutere Hills label is uniquely New Zealand, it was designed by the Wellington artist Sandra Rogers and is from the Maori design ‘Ngaru’ which represents the cutting of waves when a waka (canoe) is moving, this is apt for us as ‘Moutere’ in Maori means ‘sail swiftly for you’.
